Youth Programs

Rockwall Children’s Playhouse (RCP) at Rockwall Community Playhouse (RCP)

RCP at RCP After School Academy believes the future of community theater depends on identifying, nurturing and developing the talents of children.  No matter what future endeavors children pursue, experience onstage prepares them for confident communication before a wide range of audiences. This tuition based program has evolved to being offered twice a year.

The lessons behind these expressions are playfully illustrated through a series of the well-known stories, and brought to life by a variety of human and animal characters. Darcy struggles with issues that most teenagers deal with on a day-to-day basis. What makes her unique, however, is that she experiences the events in her life as short movies -- or "daydreams," as her teacher calls them. Often these movies grow out of her desire to fit in and be accepted. But during a class trip to a museum -- complete with a romance, an evil nemesis, and a nerd fashion show -- Darcy is able to find her way with the help of both her intelligence and her unwillingness to change who she is just to fit in.

Book, Music & Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse
Based on the "Doctor Dolittle" stories by Hugh Lofting and The Twentieth Century Fox film.

Directed by Joseph Lee Burnam

The classic tale of kindness to animals trots, crawls and flies onto the stage in Doctor Dolittle JR. All of the characters we've come to love through the stories of Hugh Lofting and the magical movie musical are given new life in the stage version.

The musical tells the classic tale of a wacky, but kind, doctor who can talk to animals, taking the audience on a journey from the small English village of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh to the far corners of the world. When Doctor Dolittle attempts to help a seal named Sophie, he’s wrongly accused of murder and stands trial before General Bellowes. Once pronounced innocent, Dolittle is free to continue with his search for the Great Pink Sea Snail – the oldest and wisest of the creatures on earth.

Doctor Dolittle JR. provides directors the wonderful flexibility of casting performers of all ages and types, including a large ensemble that calls for actors to portray talking animals.

RCP’s Teen Theater program gives the talented students of the Rockwall area an opportunity to rehearse and perform their own production each summer.  This program focuses on performance opportunities for young people, highlighting their unique style and energy, while preparing them for later community theater participation.  Many of our teens have gone on to perform in larger shows and bigger venues.  We regularly hear from past participants how their involvement in RCP shaped their performance skills and built lasting memories. Each year, RCP awards a scholarship to graduating seniors to further their education in the fine arts in college.

All RCP at RCP programs are tuition based and cost $150 per child.  Limited scholarships based on need are available.
